On Bratislava’s bustling Hviezdoslavovo námestie square, the annual Slovak Press Photo competition took place last month, offering a stunning showcase of both established and up-and-coming talent in Slovak and international photojournalism.
From gripping news coverage to breathtaking moments in art and sport, this year’s exhibition captured the pulse of both global and local events—culminating in the striking image of the chaos that ensued following the May assassination attempt on Premier Robert Fico, which made headlines worldwide.
“This photo will outlast me”
The Grand Prix winning photographer, Radovan Stoklasa from Trenčín, a city in western Slovakia, is a veteran photojournalist.
“The work is very varied. You start with a press conference in the morning, then you go to a protest rally, for example, and you end with a sports event in the evening.”
Little did he know on that fateful day in May 2024, he would be at the right place at just the right time to capture history in the making.
