VISITORS have long enjoyed the warm healing springs of Vyšné Ružbachy in Slovakia's Spiš region. The waters have provided an antidote to the region's cold climate for centuries.
The springs' popularity is evident from the frequent references to it in Spiš' official records. It comes as no surprise to see that Polish and Hungarian nobility established the spa as a regular meeting place in the 16th century.
After World War I, Vyšné Ružbachy spa was rebuilt in a modern style.
A metre-high travertine wall encircling one of the springs is the most famous and most interesting feature of the spa. It resembles a crater. This picture postcard from just after World War I captures the spa's main pool.
