Warm weather wakes up spring flowers on sunny slopes of Devínska Kobyla hill

Warm weather is waking up nature in Slovakia. On the sunny western slopes of the Devínska Kobyla hill above Bratislava, pheasant’s eyes have started to blossom. This protected yellow flower is a typical spring species.

The occurrence of these flowers is unusual under ordinary winter conditions, but with the current warm temperatures it is possible, said botanist Darina Válková from the administration of the Small Carpatian protected area to which the Devínska Kobyla hill belongs.

The pheasant’s eye, adonis vernalis in Latin, usually begins to blossom in March. The sunny slopes of Devínska Kobyla are an excellent place for this endangered species as they provide a dry environment with plenty of sunshine which is preferred by this species.

Pheasant’s eye is not the only spring flower species that has started to blossom. Snowdrops and pansies are begining to flower too.

Whole-day temperatures above zero should remain in southern Slovakia to the end of this week. Then the weather should become a bit colder, based on the weather forecast by the Slovak Hydro-Meteorological Office (SHMÚ).
