Even though it won’t lead to charges, new evidence will make political choices starker.

There was a time, a decade ago, when I was lugging the hard-copy Gorilla file around Slovakia in a briefcase, that I would have given my left testicle for the original audio recording. Not just to convince people (a prosecutor, perhaps, or even my own editors!) that Penta had hijacked the state. But above all to reassure myself – that I wasn’t just a useful idiot in a colossal political fraud, or hastening towards my own expensive professional ruin.

But now? After the file has been published, widely read, exhaustively reported – and just as comprehensively ignored by the criminal justice system?
