I suppose it’s natural, after Ján and Martina’s shocking murder, for journalists to take inventory of their own experience of violence, and to attempt to make sense of it. Was it related to my job? is probably the question uppermost in the mind of everyone who has been inexplicably beaten up, confined or carjacked. Who did it to me? Were they paid to do it? What did they expect to achieve?

Only slowly are we realising that there is now a new set of questions to be asked by everyone who worked on the kind of stories that Ján did – questions so hideously unthinkable that they are painful even to write.

Would they kill my partner, if they came to my home? Would they kill my children?
