Welcome to your weekly commentary and overview of news from Slovakia. The government is doubling down on its claims of a planned “coup”, and is now asserting an international dimension. Even Ukraine’s military intelligence service responded to Fico’s claims.

The imagined ‘coup’ goes international
The Georgian National Legion, which has been fighting alongside Ukraine against Russia for years now, is secretly organising coups in the European Union. Fortunately for Slovakia, they are not very good at this.
Sound preposterous? It should do, because it is. But it’s no worse than the wild claims that Slovakia’s prime minister, Robert Fico, and his yes-men would have you believe as they endeavour to expand their theory that this country is threatened by an actual “coup”. Most recently, they have decided to flesh these out by adding an international dimension.
That has meant talking up the supposed involvement of people from Georgia and, especially, from Ukraine. The way Fico stylises himself in this whole construct also shows where he personally sees his actual alliances.
