Deposed prime minister Robert Fico doesn’t think Slovakia’s position on migration will keep the country out of the European Union’s so-called core — the group of countries strongly connected with Germany and France that will set the course of the EU for years to come.
He is wrong, it already is.
Overnight Thursday the EU agreed to a common — if vague — position on migration. Leaders pledged to release more funds to Turkey and North Africa to work on migration issues, and the voluntary resettlement of legitimate asylum seekers throughout the EU. So-called “control centres” will be created in Europe to handle refugee flows and the EU will explore setting up processing centres outside the EU. That plan was designed last weekend at another meeting of leaders from 16 EU countries. You know who wasn’t there? Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland.
