In developments this week, Teresa May, the UK’s prime minister, concluded negotiations with the European Union over a Brexit deal. Then she delayed a parliamentary vote on the deal when she saw it could not pass. After that, she survived a parliamentary no-confidence vote, but only by promising she would not lead her Tory party in future elections. Finally, May went to an EU summit and attempted to reopen negotiations that she had just said were complete.
It’s chaos. May, and thus the UK, doesn’t know what she wants because nobody — least of all May herself, who persisted with nonsense like “Brexit means Brexit” — has ever had the courage to express what Brexit might look like.
