This week, a new report by the UN found that, at the current pace, global temperatures will rise by 1.5 degrees Celsius over pre-industrial levels by 2040. This is both faster than previous estimates and leads to predictions about increased damage. The report forecasts $54 trillion in damage and tens of millions of climate refugees by 2040.
In short, the report, compiled by 91 researchers from 40 countries, analysing 6,000 scientific studies, and commissioned as part of the 2015 Paris Agreement, found that global warming is even more serious than you thought. Combined with the populism, isolationism and general hostility to foreigners and outsiders now a common feature of political discourse in most places, we have a recipe for extinguishing human life on planet Earth.
