AS PART of efforts to encourage people to adopt a pet for the holidays, the Banská Bystrica quarantine station for animals organised a pre-Christmas taking out dogs on December 13.Visitors were encouraged to inspect the facility, take one of the dogs for a walk, but also get a Christmas punch, listen to carols, watch the dogs train, listen to their stories and get some advice for breeders.
In Poprad, people were invited to bring the surplus food from their Christmas Eve dinner for the local shelter. Visitors who came on December 29 also walked the dogs and brought presents. A total of 200 kilograms of various delicacies were collected on that day.
“People also donated old covers, rugs to heat them or their doghouses, even some toys,” Poprad council spokesman Marián Galajda informed the TASR newswire. “About 120 people stopped by during that day.” He added that kennels were emptied, as people took all the 25 dogs form the shelter for a walk.
Both towns stressed that people who decide to adopt a dog form a shelter will be freed from paying a fee for keeping the dog for one year. (In Banská Bystrica, this fee amounts to €36 a year.)
