Bowling in Galanta

THE MKK Slovan bowling team in the town of Galanta organised a record-setting bowling marathon in 2010 called FUNK Galanta that received a certificate from the Guinness Book of Records as the Biggest Bowling Tournament in the World, with 324 bowlers participating over three days.

The event was repeated in 2011 on a smaller scale when 164 competitors from Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Hungary showed off their bowling skills over a period of 37 hours, 54 minutes and 11 seconds. Men and women, both young and old, competed in seven categories with the main groupings being singles and pairs, according to the organisers’ press release. Ivan Baboš from the Inter Bratislava bowling club won the main category for men while Renáta Szabó from Köfém SC club in Hungary captured the women’s title. The youngsters’ category was won by Tibor Varga from Zlaté Klasy. The oldest participant was Lukáč Karlubík, age 79, from Slávia Nitra while Nikola Mazúchová, age 13, was the youngest. Galanta’s mayor gave a Mayor’s Award to the local bowling enthusiasts for helping to spread the fame of their hometown in Slovakia as well as abroad.
