According to the new EF English Proficiency Index 2024 survey, which is carried out annualy by the Education First organisation, Slovakia ranks 18th out of 116 countries where English is not the mother language. More than 2.1 million people took part in it.
When it comes to Europe, Slovakia ranks 16th out of 35 countries, which in both cases means high proficiency in English. While Austria, Poland and Hungary placed above Slovakia, Czechia and Ukraine placed below.
However, this time Slovakia fell short of last year's result by three points.
From among 112 capital cities, Bratislava ranked 15th, but its score placed it in the very high proficiency category. With the exception of Prague and Kyiv, every other capital of the neighbouring countries placed above it. Bratislava even beat Brussels.
"Thanks to the very high level of English proficiency that the residents of the [Slovak] capital achieve, they know how to use an appropriate style of language in various conversations, and can easily read more complex texts or, for example, they can conclude a contract with a native English speaker," said Education First country manager Monika Barboráková, as quoted by the TASR newswire.
Last year, the residents of Košice Region, especially the city of Košice, had the best efficiency.
The Netherlands, Norway and Singapore, respectively, placed in the top three spots this year. You can read the full report here.
