The Bratislava public city transport company, DPB, wants more people to make the switch from individual to public transportation.
In an interview with the economic daily Hospodárske Noviny, the chair of the DPB board of directors, Branislav Záhradník, said this will require a big investment in modernising a vehicle park and expanding the amount of trips in order to increase the quality of travelling.
The company is considering various ways to financing these investments including leasing, adding a partner for the project, or ordering transport services from the vehicles' owners.
The company must first get out of a vicious cycle of high costs caused by its obsolete vehicle park, which is expensive to operate and maintain.
THe DPB has currently 3,100 employees, of which just 1,400 are drivers. The company wants to cut its administrative labour force by 10 to 15 percent by the end of this year and use the saved money to increase drivers' salaries.
