CAMERAS and police guards will monitor the Prešov suburb of Stará tehelňa where officially in 176 social apartments over 1700 people live. Town officials want to increase residents’ security in the suburb and surrounding houses, the daily SME reported.
The town wants to establish a police station in a building that in 2003 was sold to the civic association Romar for a symbolic one crown, according to the daily.
Local officials allege that the association has not fulfilled its agreement to provide social and educational services for the local Roma. They voted to cancel the contract with Romar and set up a police station in the building.
The daily estimates that there are about 2000 Roma living in the suburb, which suffers from virtually 100-percent unemployment.
Local deputy František Husovský said that he had proposed a complex solution for the suburb, including a kindergarten, elementary school, physician, pastoral services and shops.
