According to Slovak law, political parties and candidates are free to spend as much money as they want in their campaigns for election to the regional government bodies and these campaigns officially start on Wednesday, October 28, the TASR newswire wrote.
“The law doesn't say anything about financing these political campaigns,” the Central Election Committee's records clerk, Lívia Škultétyová, told TASR on October 26. Towns and villages are supposed to set aside space for the election posters of coalitions, parties and candidates running in the elections, observing the principle of equality.
A 48-hour moratorium must be respected before the regional elections which mean that campaigning must cease as of November 12. The polling stations will be opened on November 14 on 7:00.
A possible second round of the elections is scheduled for November 28. This will take place if no candidate for the top position in a regional government gains an absolute majority. There are eight regions in Slovakia that elect a total of 412 members of the regional parliaments. More than 3,000 candidates are running for these seats while 57 candidates are vying for the post of regional governor. TASR
