A celebration of local history took place at the beginning of August in the old town of Trenčín, culminating on Saturday, August 4, at the town’s famous castle. The core of the festivities took place in the local Mierové Square, but on Saturday, they were moved to the castle where Trenčianske hradné slávnosti / Trenčín Castle Celebrations were organised.
The festivities opened with an event commemorating the 600th anniversary of the King Sigismund of Luxembourg granting Trenčín free royal town privileges, and ended on Saturday with a variety of events including fencing, period games and competitions for children and adults, involving archery and shooting old firearms.
“We also had a historical market with artisans and craftsmen who demonstrated their skills and sold their products, as well as a Kuruc (anti-Habsburg rebel) and Ottoman military camp, fencing shows, a puppet theatre and much more – for all types of audiences, castle celebration organizer Ladislav Sekerka told the TASR newswire. Since Monday, the Mireové Square hosted the gladiators’ arena with staged battles and a Roman theatrical production, culminating on Friday, August 3. (Trenčín is said to be the northernmost known destination reached by ancient Romans in central Europe.)
