As of April 1, 2009, parents who avoid child-maintenance payments will be deprived of their driving licences, according to an amendment drawn up by the chairman of the Movement for a Democratic Slovakia (HZDS) Vladimír Mečiar and fellow HZDS MPs Katarína Tóthová and Ľudmila Mušková which was approved by Parliament on February 18.
According to the existing law, it is possible to deduct sums owed from dodgers’ salaries and other incomes, assign a debt and sell assets, securities or companies, but the government has reported that there have been increasing difficulties in extracting the payments, the TASR newswire wrote.
The amendment gives bailiffs the power to confiscate driving licences, which will only be returned when the amount owed is paid. The only exception will be for people who make their living directly from driving. Confiscations will only be allowed for avoidance of child-maintenance payments, and not for any other debts. TASR
