CHRISTMAS is usually a time of peace and rest but even during the holidays one needs to keep an eye out for potentially nasty accidents.

Slovak insurance companies and branches of multinational insurers have mentioned several curious incidents connected with the festive season. For example, the ČSOB Poisťovňa insurer reported on a car that was damaged by a thrown sack of potatoes and a TV set smashed beyond repair by a tipsy Christmas tree. During a family fight, an angry husband in a dramatic gesture perhaps meant to emphasise his point tossed the sack of potatoes out of the window. The sack hit a parked car and damaged the hood.

After unwrapping Christmas gifts, which included a new LCD TV set, a family’s children began to chase around the tree. Bumping into it, the tree fell down so hard that it toppled the new TV, already plugged in and being watched by the family. Needless to say, that was the end of Christmas movie night.

Insurers note that up to 16 percent of fires reported during Christmas are caused by unattended advent candles.
