Transport Minister Pavol Prokopovič wants to get Sk80-100 billion (€1.9-2.38 billion) from private sources for the construction of the D1 highway to Košice via Žilina, news wire TASR reported.
The highway should be completed by 2008. However, long deadlines in the law on public procurement might slow down the process of selecting strategic investors, according to Prokopovič.
The Slovak Roads Administration is in charge of selecting an advisor for the tender for the entrance of private capital into highway construction.
Prokopovič expects construction work on the first highway section financed by the private sector to begin in mid 2005. So far, Italian, French, and two German companies have indicated interest.
