The construction of the D1/D4 junction is entering a new phase, burdening drivers with traffic restrictions for the next months. This is the junction of the D1 backbone highway and the D4 Bratislava’s bypass, which builders "forget" to build during the construction of the Bratislava bypass.
The first restriction will start on Tuesday, March 12. On this day the bridge above the D1 connecting road I/6 with Čierna Voda, part of Chorvátsky Grob, will be closed to prepare for demolition.
The bridge's demolition will take place the following weekend, March 16 and 17. Due to security reasons this section of the D1 highway, from the Triblavina junction to the Bratislava-Zlaté Piesky junction, will be closed. The detour route will lead through the Bratislava - Zlaté Piesky junction (road I/61 - road II/127-junction Bernolákovo) and vice versa.
"The actual closure of the highway section is predominantly planned during the night hours, from Saturday to Sunday," said Július Mihálik, investment director of the National Highway Company (NDS), as cited by the Pravda daily. "The D1 section will close on March 16 at 22:00. However, an hour before the closure, there will be preparatory work on the highway, which may complicate traffic, so drivers are advised to avoid the section from 21:00."
If everything goes according to plan, the demolition work will be finished on Sunday at noon.
The second restriction will follow. The lanes on the D1 in the direction to and from Bratislava will be narrowed and the speed limit will be reduced for several months.
"The adjustment of the lanes is immediately planned after the demolition of the bridge from Čierna Voda if the weather permits it," the NDS said.
Slow traffic and snarl-ups, which can last a few minutes or even several tens of minutes, are to be expected, especially during rush hours.
The options for bypassing this section
If someone is considering a traffic diversion, there are at least two options in play. A driver coming from Trnava on the highway to Bratislava from mid-March can exit the highway at the Triblavina junction and continue along the old Senec road towards the city. If someone takes the D1 from Trnava towards the south, he or she must again leave the highway at the Triblavina junction and continue along the old Senec road, and after Ivanka pri Dunaji village join the Bratislava bypass, i.e. the D4 highway, and continue further south. If drivers go from Bratislava towards Trnava, they will practically use the same routes as to the city.
