A MAN sentenced to 25 years in prison for a terrorist attack near a McDonald restaurant in Košice in 2011, had his sentence upheld by July 9 by a Košice district court. The man is the first ever person convicted of terrorism in Slovakia.
A sympathiser with extremist animal-rights supporters was already sentenced back in May 2013. His lawyers appealed against the verdict, presenting a new expert evaluation according to which he was unable to control his behaviour due to mental illness.
A regional subsequently annulled the verdict and returned the case back down to the district court. The original verdict was now confirmed, but the lawyer has appealed again and the case will again go to the regional court.
The defence continues to maintain that man suffers from mental illness. Expert testimonies claimed that the defendant bore full responsibility for his actions.
