Representatives of several health associations have sent an open letter to Health Minister Ivan Uhliarik stating that the current lack of vaccinations might be putting young children in particular at risk.
According to the letter, the complications are a direct result of the new system of issuing vaccinations, whereby doctors have to purchase the drugs themselves and have the cost refunded by health insurers later. "Health insurers aren't complying with the law because they aren't ensuring a sufficient amount of vaccinations," reads the open letter, as quoted by the TASR newswire. According to the letter, published on Thursday, December 15, several general practitioners have already stopped vaccinating patients or are using drugs acquired earlier. In addition to calling on Uhliarik to rectify the situation, the doctors addressed their objections to Prime Minister Iveta Radičová, the parliamentary health-care committee and President Ivan Gašparovič.
