The European Commission (EC) has green-lighted Slovakia's first application for a non-refundable contribution from the European Union’s Cohesion Fund for €263,473. The money is to be used to co-finance the construction of the D1 highway section between Sverepec and Vrtižer, Transport Minister Ľubomír Vážny said on February 19, the SITA newswire wrote.
Slovakia can now start drawing the first resources for development of its highway infrastructure within the Transport Operational Program drafted for the current 2007-2013 programming period.
The National Highway Company (NDS) is the investor in this project. The decision of the Commission allows Slovakia to draw down the first funds. In the first half of this year, the EC is also expected to approve another five projects for about €900 million.
European resources should also contribute to modernization of the railway track from Žilina to Krásno nad Kysucou, construction of the R1 dual carriageway from Žarnovica to Šášovské Podhradie, and highway bypasses around Galanta and Trnava, SITA reported.
