Mikolaj criticised fans at the April 24 match between Slovakia and Hungary at the World Ice-Hockey Championships in Switzerland, when Slovakia edged a 4:3 victory. According to the minister, the rowdy behaviour witnessed during and after the match was provoked by the Hungarian fans.

The whistling by Hungarian fans during the playing of the Slovak national anthem annoyed the Swiss organisers as well, stated Mikolaj.

“To tie with Hungary - there could be no bigger shame than that. Thank God Slovakia won,” he added.

"I don't like such inappropriate things at matches," ethnic-Hungarian SMK party MP and former education minister László Szigeti said in a reaction, the TASR wrote. "On the other hand, I think that it isn't good when inappropriate interventions take place, which have not been properly investigated, unfortunately," he added, referring to a recent football match between in Dunajská Streda during which the police intervened in response to incidents between fans.
