Elite police investigators surprise Fico

Smer has threatened to fire top investigators dealing with cases linked to the party.

The top police investigators who uncovered that organised crime thrived under the previous Smer-led governments will not lose their jobs despite many threats from the Smer party.

Smer, led by Robert Fico, will be at the helm of a new Slovak government in the days to come. Hlas, founded by Smer renegades, and the ultranationalist Slovak National Party, will also be part of Fico’s fourth cabinet.

Investigators such as Ján Čurilla, Pavol Ďurka, Milan Sabota, Branislav Dunčko, Róbert Magula and Štefan Mašin received whistleblower status, the Sme daily writes. This means that they cannot lose their jobs without approval from the Office for the Protection of Whistleblowers, a body legally established during the third Smer-led government (2016-2020).

The Office began to function in 2021.
