Fico has doubts about Russia sanctions

RUSSIA has nowhere to retreat and Ukraine considers every concession a loss, said Prime Minister Robert Fico when presenting the official Slovakia’s attitude before the informal European Union summit in Brussels at the session of the parliamentary foreign affairs committee on February 11.

He said he also doubts the sense of sanctions against Russia as they have not helped to solve the conflict, as reported by the Sme daily.

“We only harmed the relations and suffered economic damage in the European area,” Fico said, as quoted by Sme.

Analysts however disagree with Fico.

Security analyst Marián Majer says that though the sanctions are not ideal, they are legitimate and the only a strict tool used in diplomacy.

“Their effect can be seen, there is no doubt,” Majer told Sme. “It is not the sanctions themselves, but the combination of the diplomatic efforts, drop in oil prices and absence of internal reforms.”

According to the analyst, Fico has several times declared the attitude which was not official towards the allies.

Fico also told the MPs that Slovakia is still prepared to provide Ukraine with humanitarian aid. The country will also guarantee the gas supplies that can account for up to 30 percent of its needs. The PM however refused to help Ukraine with weapons, Sme wrote.
