Construction company Skanska SK will in the next few days begin work on the R4 highway, a 14-kilometre road that will connect Košice to the village of Milhošť, near the border with Hungary.

The costs are set to reach €77.69 million, and the road should be ready by the end of 2012, said Transport Minister Ján Figeľ on Thursday, August 5, when the contract was signed between Skanska SK and the National Highway Company (NDS).

"Transport is a strategic tool for developing the country. This highway could significantly help the eastern regions of Slovakia to develop," said Figeľ. The minister said he was confident that the R4 tender was won by a fair bid which was the least expensive. "The fair bid means that we've started to use public finances in a more effective manner," he commented. Figeľ said that his ministry will soon launch talks with the Hungarian authorities in an attempt to spur them into working more intensively on their road infrastructure as well.
