The four parties negotiating the formation of the next cabinet yesterday struck a deal resolving the most serious conflicts over ministry and cabinet posts.
It has been agreed, for example, that the Christian Democrats will take the Interior Ministry and Speaker of Parliament seats, satisfying two of that party’s strongest ambitions.
Opposition HZDS party leader Vladimír Mečiar is today scheduled to meet President Rudolf Schuster to inform him of the results of the HZDS attempts to form a government before Schuster as expected gives current PM Mikuláš Dzurinda a mandate to form the next cabinet.
Calm has also returned to forex markets after central bank governor Marian Jusko’s late-week comments that the post-election surge in the Slovak crown against the euro and dollar had been “too fast and too sudden”.
