Recent developments in the European Union, the debt crisis and opportunities for further bilateral cooperation were the key issues discussed at a meeting between Slovak President Ivan Gašparovič and the speaker of Finnish parliament, Eero Heinaluoma, on June 23, the TASR newswire reported.
“I am glad that in the current crisis we share the same views on preserving the EU as such, partly because Finland is the only Nordic country whose currency is the same as ours – the euro,” said Gašparovič, as quoted by TASR.
Both leaders agreed that the eurozone should enlarge but Gašparovič said that the economic situation rather than the political situation of membership candidates should be the main accession criterion in the future.
Regarding fields of cooperation, Heinaluoma said that Finland has become increasingly interested in trade and tourism. Gašparovič said that cooperation between the two countries could also involve education, science and culture, TASR wrote.
