Flood waters were still threatening 16 municipalities in eastern Slovakia in the regions of Prešov, Bardejov, and Svidník but it seemed that they were calming down on Monday, June 29. After the damage caused in recent days by local storms, hailstorms and wind, the highest flood alert was rescinded in the districts of Humenné, Prešov and Stropkov.
The head of the district Flood Commission in Bardejov, Mária Hankovská, told the SITA newswire that the third level of flood alert was rescinded in the district as a whole, but remains in effect for individual villages and towns. The villages most stricken by floods are Richvald, Andrejová, Bardejovská Nová Ves and Beloveža.
In southern Slovakia, the Danube River is expected to keep rising, however, the third level of flood alert will not be announced, the SITA newswire wrote. The level of the Danube in Štúrovo will rise further on Tuesday but has already culminated in Komárno.
“The third level was not announced, as the waters in the upper part of the Danube keep declining – and we see no reason to double the efforts,” vice-manager of the Slovak Water-Management Authority (SVP), Peter Minárik, told SITA. In the Bratislava suburb of Devín, the Danube level is higher than the first grade of flood alert, amounting to 667 centimetres. On Tuesday, it should reach 730 centimetres but based predictions it should fall again on Wednesday. SITA
