A revision to the law on income taxes prepared by the Finance Ministry is causing a headache for non-governmental organisations. The NGOs say that the draft removes the motivation for sponsorship. The foundations also dislike the idea of taxing income from their activities.
"The changes not only fail to open new avenues, but even cancel the little that in the past motivated citizens and firms to donate money to non-governmental organizations," Šarolta Pufflerová of the Citizen and Democracy told the daily SME.
In past the international community has helped to fill the purses of NGOs, however, this possibility will also shortly end. The US embassy has confirmed that Washington has decided to close the Slovak branch of the USAID, which has injected $190 million (€168 million) into the non-governmental sector.
