“After the issuing of an international arrest warrant, Interpol National Headquarters in Bratislava, in cooperation with the Police Presidium’s Criminal Police Office, made a great effort to locate the wanted person,” Slovak Police Corps Presidium spokesperson Martin Wäldl told the TASR newswire.
Csonka, 48, was arrested in Mexico on January 21, 2015 based on an international arrest warrant issued by Nitra Regional Court in 2013. This followed a search that began in 2008.
Csonka inflicted damage worth 29.675 million Slovak crowns (circa €1 million) on the ministry. He allegedly signed a contract for the sale of motorway stamps with the Road Management State Fund in 1998. He then took possession a total of 81,800 stamps, supposedly in order to supply distribution centres. However instead of doing this, he directly sold them to other persons without recording this and without the State Fund’s approval. The profits from this activity went into his own pocket, TASR reported.
According to unofficial information obtained by TASR, Csonka left his family in Slovakia to go to Mexico, where he remarried and had a daughter.
Once extradited, Csonka was transferred to the Remand Institution and then the Imprisonment Institution in Bratislava.
