President Ivan Gašparovič hit back at his main rival in the March 21 presidential election, Iveta Radičová, who criticised his State of the Republic speech to parliament this week.

“Unlike her, I was pointing to our [troubled] economy long ago... last year, as early as the start of October with President Bush in the White House,” he said, adding that he had also pushed for the formation of a council for the economic crisis, the TASR newswire reported.

Referring to what he described as Radičová's poor preparation and lack of knowledge in her critique, he suggested that she hadn’t been reading the newspapers thoroughly enough and was thus unaware of his activities.

President Gašparovič, according to remarks by Radičová after the president’s address, is not taking advantage of all his powers to intervene in political developments at a time of economic crisis. TASR
