Denmark took over the presidency of the EU on January 1 during one of the biggest and possibly the most severe crises in the history of the EU, said Danish Ambassador to Slovakia Anita Hugau at a press conference in Bratislava on Thursday, January 12, during which she introduced the key points of the Danish EU presidency.
The ambassador described the financial and debt crisis in Europe as the biggest problem awaiting the Danish EU presidency and called on EU-member states to be more responsible. The six months of the Danish presidency should see the EU's budget for 2014-2020 agreed.
In the economic sphere, Copenhagen wants to direct its attention to strengthening the single market and removing administrative obstacles to small and medium-sized enterprises. The creation of a joint energy infrastructure and harmonisation of the asylum system will be other Danish priorities, Hugau noted.
Denmark has been a member of the EU since 1973; it is not a member of the eurozone.
