HZDS revolt in works

The Pravda paper reports that grassroots members of the HZDS opposition party are preparing a revolt against leader Vladimír Mečiar and will suggest his removal at the party’s next national congress in two weeks.

In last weekend’s elections, the HZDS recorded its worst-ever result of 19.5 per cent, and even though it won the ballot was unable to form a government after other political parties closed ranks against the authoritarian Mečiar.
