Bratislava hosted the first meeting of the new board of the joint Slovakia-EU Committee on December 3. The agenda was topped by an evaluation of the report of the European Parliament on the progress Slovakia has made in its integration efforts.
The report reflects the European Parliament's stance on Slovakia's admission to European structures. The EP Foreign Committee adopted a resolution in November that positively evaluated post-election changes in Slovakia. According to the resolution, the improved political atmosphere in Slovakia will speed its fulfilment of the Copenhagen political criteria. The committee also asked the European Council (EC) to treat Slovakia more flexibly in order to speed up its integration. The EP should endorse the report in the near future.
Slovakia was represented by Peter Weiss, chair of the parliamentary foreign affairs committee, and František Šebej, chair of the parliamentary committee for European integration.
