Head of the parliamentary committee for conflicts of interest, Miroslav Beblavý of the Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ), opined that even if managers of the National Highway Company (NDS) receive fines for the disadvantageous contracts they concluded, these will be paid (thanks to the contracts and the way they were worded) from the insurance policies of their employer, the state-owned company.
The Sme daily wrote in its Tuesday, February 26, issue that managers of other state companies, too, have insurance policies that cover them against damage they cause, also to their own companies, and discrimination towards subordinates as well as against sexual harassment.
The Hospodárske noviny daily wrote that Daniel Mako of the NDS board sent a letter to the committee which explains the stance towards the insurance contract. However, Beblavý told HN that Mako only repeated the previous statements of the company, which he has deemed insufficient. The committee should deal with the board’s stance at its March session and scrutinise it to determine whether the law was, or was not, violated.
