Interior Minister Robert Kaliňák confirmed on February 27 at a press conference that almost two and a half years after the murder of university student Daniel Tupý, police have charged one person with the crime and accused three others of related offenses.
One of the three accused committed suicide before the arrests were made, the TASR newswire wrote.
The two other accused are currently being detained on a preliminary basis, but the Prosecutor's Office is preparing a proposal for them to be remanded in custody.
"The accused seem to be supporters of extremist groups," said Kaliňák. "We have collected sufficient evidence to charge them, however, we are at the beginning of the whole process and there is a lot of work still to be done.”
The police, according to information in the media, searched the homes of the accused early in the morning of February 25, where they found several knives.
Kaliňák established a special investigation team for the Tupý murder shortly after taking office. It has eight people and is headed by a woman. Allegedly, special interior ministry unit members also form part of the team.
Tupý, a student at Comenius University in Bratislava, was murdered on November 4, 2005, at the Tyršovo embankment on the right bank of the Danube.
According to eyewitnesses, the murder was carried out by Neo-Nazis. In 2006, a memorial plaque was placed in front of the university where he studied, and at the site of the murder, a memorial for the victims of racism and fascism was unveiled that same year. TASR
