President Andrej Kiska is not satisfied with the proposed changes to the election and work of Constitutional Court judges and believes that the coalition should instead draw their inspiration from the proposal of experts on constitutional law. He considers it a good opportunity to also change the requirements for judges of the Constitutional Court, he said following the meeting with the experts who submitted their solution for public debate last week.
"I welcome that there is a will to change the creation of the Constitutional Court," Kiska said, as quoted by the SITA newswire. "I see the will on the part of the government and after today I also see the will on the part of the experts."
Kiska said the parliament should put that will to use and not squander it with a "below-average solution".
The lawyers propose, among other things, that judges should be elected in shorter intervals and that candidates are presented to the public much earlier than just one or two weeks before the actual election, said Marian Porvažník on behalf of the signatories of the call. It is also important to take the burden off of the shoulders of the parliamentary constitutional affairs committee and create an ad hoc commission of experts who will dispose of sufficient time to collect all the relevant information about the candidates.
The representatives of the initiative expect to meet Justice Minister Gábor Gál soon to discuss their proposals.
