Agriculture Minister Zdenka Kramplová continues to oppose the mining of perlite in the Viticultural Region of Tokaj (Košice region), ministry spokesperson Eva Horňáčková told the TASR newswire on February 6.
According to Kramplová, the mining of perlite in an area where grapes for the famous Tokaj wines are grown is completely unacceptable given the dust stirred up would affect the vineyards.
In this case, it's all the more serious because the region is a unique cultural, natural and historical area in terms of viticulture and winemaking. Plus, there are expectations of a pick-up in tourism in the area. Last but not least, according to Kramplová, this area bordering Hungary hopes to be included in the UNESCO World Heritage List and this process would be hampered if mining projects were launched.
The Hungarian Tokaj-Hegyalja region appeared on the List in 2002. TASR
