FOREIGN Minister Eduard Kukan and US Ambassador to Slovakia Rodolphe Vallee met on May 19 for talks about the possibility of cancelling the visa requirement for Slovak citizens to travel to the US.
The two men discussed a recent initiative by a group of American senators to scrap the visa requirement for countries that are members of the European Union, provided they have at least 300 soldiers in Iraq and represent no terrorist threat. The condition is seen as tailor-made for Poland, which satisfies the troop requirement.
Slovakia has only 110 soldiers in Iraq, most of whom are involved in de-mining activities, the TASR news agency reported.
"It was agreed that both sides will continue to closely monitor the visa issue," said the Foreign Ministry after the meeting.
