At the beginning of May 2023, Ján Mazák, aged 57, made headlines by swimming across the Narva River from Estonia to Russia. Last week, he was involved in a robbery in Košice. After spending several weeks in a Russian prison, he is now in a Slovak one.
He was placed in the Košice detention centre on Floriánska Street after a city court decision to take him into custody. Mazák faces charges of armed robbery, which could result in a prison sentence of seven to 12 years.
He entered a florist's, but left with cash not flowers
The crime took place on Friday, August 23, shortly after noon at a florist's on Komenského Street in Košice.
According to a police source, Mazák initially asked a shop assistant, Miroslava, for a potted plant. While she was removing the price tag, he approached her and pressed the knife blade of a multi-tool against her stomach.
As Miroslava resisted, he grabbed her arm and tried to press the knife to her neck. He then ordered her to move to the cash register and open it. While she did so, he held the knife and waited for her to put the money into a plastic bag he was holding.
After she complied, he told her not to shout and left the scene. The flower shop owner suffered a loss of approximately €250.
