The excise duty on wine after Slovakia's intended entry to the EU next year could be lower than Sk25 (€0.60) per litre, as originally planned in tax reforms, according to Finance Minister Ivan Mikloš.

"There is a strong argument for it. Some EU countries that produce wine do not have such high duties," said Mikloš.

Mikloš said he believed his proposed tax reforms will increase investment in Slovakia. By the third quarter of last year, inward investment was almost three times the figure for the whole of 2001, at just over €700 per person.
