As many as 400 hundred people are to be dismissed in the districts of Nove Mesto nad Vahom and Myjava (both south-western Trencin region) in the near future, the TASR newswire was told by Marián Mesiarik of the Nové Mesto nad Váhom Employment Office on November 27.
A mass lay-off has been announced by Chirana Injecta Stará Tura medical material manufacturer, which will see 250 people jobless.
"We've got a meeting with the trade union on schedule on November 27. For the sake of orientation, it appears currently that they (the lay-offs) will happen very soon - on December 1," Mesiarik said, adding that this information is to be considered as tentative.
Meat company Tauris, with its headquarters in Rimavská Sobota (Banská Bystrica region), is set to close its facility in Myjava (Trenčín region).
"The employees will get an offer from the owner to go to Rimavská Sobota (which is approximately 200 kilometres away from Myjava - ed. note), but I don't expect they'll accept it," Mesiarik said, noting that the date closure has been set for January 1, 2009.
