Once they are built, the third and fourth units of the Mochovce nuclear power plant will be classified as a third-generation nuclear facility, said Paulo Ruzzini, the director general of Slovakia's main power producer, Slovenské Elektrárne (SE).

But Jan Haverkamp, of the Greenpeace non-profit environmental organisation, disputes that.

The public’s high acceptance of nuclear energy is the basis for the development in this sector, Ruzzini said at the European Nuclear Energy Forum in Bratislava on November 27.

SE spokesperson Juraj Kopriva said 87 percent of the people living in the Mochovce area support the completion of the two units.

Ruzzini said he thinks Europe must provide a joint legislative and regulatory framework, simplified administration and sufficient human resources if it wants to develop nuclear energy.

This year, the European Investment Bank (EIB) can provide €4 billion for
various projects, the director of the bank's infrastructure department, Christopher Hurst, announced. These funds can be spent on nuclear energy.

"Regardless, nobody has submitted any nuclear energy projects so far," he said.
