More lenience shown to refugees

A NEW poll reveals that 73 percent of Slovaks think it is necessary to help and protect refugees.

However, the poll, carried out by the Focus agency, also found that 50 percent of Slovaks think refugees should be sent back to their homelands. Forty percent who held this opinion were in favour of a quick expulsion from Slovakia, the daily SME reported.

These figures show that Slovaks are more understanding towards refugees than they were a few years ago. In 2001 as many as 51 percent were in favour of quick expulsion, said Mária Čierna from the Slovak office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees .
