The City Hall has already required several times that the embassy removes the fence.
In the spring US real estate agents are to come to Slovakia to select a plot for the new building of an embassy that would fulfil strict security requirements, Sme wrote.
The municipal councillors want to deal with the situation again, but they did not specify when the fence issue will get on their table. Martin Borguľa of Smer plans to interpellate Nesrovnal.
The fence was built after the attacks on the World Trade Centre in New York in 2001 around the historical building, which the Americans bought in 1948. The embassy rents the plot on which it stands from the city. The councillors prolonged the contract that was to expire in February until August 2016 on the condition that the embassy removes parking lots and storage areas from the square, as reported by Sme.
The city is ready to prolong the contract again, but the Americans have to prove they began moving or constructing a new building. It is, however, possible that the departure from the current building will even last five years, the daily wrote.
“The dialogue between the city of Bratislava and embassy representatives have been underway for more than a year with the aim to solve this situation to mutual satisfaction,” Nesrovnal said, as quoted by Sme.
Press attaché for the embassy Stephanie Fitzmaurice said on behalf of the embassy that their aim is to buy the land by August 2016. They will then design a new building. They also signed a new deal on parking which will allow the moving of cars from in front of the building, as reported by Sme.
