A new section of the D1 highway between Prešov and Svinia was opened on Monday, June 7, in Prešov, with the €96 million required to build the 7.5-kilometre section provided by the European Investment Bank and the state budget, the TASR newswire wrote.
The ceremonial opening was attended by Speaker of Parliament Pavol Paška, Prime Minister Robert Fico, Transport Minister Ľubomír Vážny and National Highway Company General Director Igor Choma.
“We must be glad for every new kilometre of highway that gets built. People who travel in this region know that the new highway section will reduce the transport load and significantly contribute to the road safety in this part of Slovakia,” Fico said as quoted by TASR.
According to police statistics, 218 accidents took place around Župčiansky mountain in 2004-09, claiming the lives of nine people. The new highway section was built by Inžinierske Stavby Košice, and features nine clover-leafs. According to Choma, the interchange built at the west city limits of Prešov represents a technologically unique project for central Europe.
