THE MAXIMUM allowed speed on the D1 highway between Bratislava and Trnava was reduced to 110 kilometres per hour in both directions as of November 1.
A desire for improved safety lies behind the reduction in the speed limit from 130 kilometres per hour on the heavily used highway section, according to the Transport Ministry and the police.
“It's not our intention to give fines, but to positively influence the safety and movement on the roads and above all to decrease the number of accidents and the death rate,” Denisa Baloghová, the spokesperson of the police corps, told the SITA newswire.
The police are appealing to drivers to behave according to the posted traffic signs and to respect the new speed limits. During the first few weeks of reduced speed limits the police say they will be actively monitoring traffic on the highway and those who commit driving offences will be judged according to the seriousness of their actions.
“We will not make any compromise when dealing with drivers who grossly violate the traffic regulations and who put other drivers and pedestrians in danger,” Baloghová said.
