Pro-Russian candidate and former judge Štefan Harabin came in third.

With 2,254,206 valid votes, the turnout was 51.91 percent, the highest since the 1999 election when 73.8 and 75.4 percent of voters voted in the first and second rounds, respectively. The highest turnout of 61.37 percent was in the Bratislava Region, the lowest of 44.14 percent in the Košice Region.

Pellegrini succeeded in the electoral strongholds of his party in eastern and central Slovakia, as well as in the traditional bastions of Smer in the regions of Kysuce, Upper Považie and Upper Nitra.

Korčok won in all of the regional towns, western as well as parts of northern and eastern Slovakia. Christian voters in the Orava region and in the districts of Kežmarok and Levoča also voted for him.

The second round is slated for April 6 and expected to be a very close one. Both presidential hopefuls have already said that they want to meet with the failed candidates, with Pellegrini already meeting some on Monday. The person Hungarian voters pick might be a very important and deciding factor.

According to a new survey for private TV JOJ, 44 percent of people who did not vote on March 23 have decided to do the same in the second round. The survey also shows that Ivan Korčok has the highest chance of gaining the support of non-voters.

Candidates can campaign ahead of the second round until midnight on Wednesday, April 3.
